UK WEEE collections fall in 2012 despite improving collection rate

20th March 2013

Preliminary data published by the Environment Agency on 28th February 2013 indicates that the total volume of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) collected in the UK has fallen by 12,579 tonnes since 2011 with a total volume of 504,563.644 tonnes collected in 2012. Although final year figures have yet to be issued, the latest set of data shows that despite the overall reduction in collections, the collection rate has actually increased slightly since 2011 with 35.377% being achieved.

This is because the calculation of collection rates is based on the relationship between the volume of new electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) placed on the market and the volume of waste equipment collected for treatment during the same period. The amount of EEE placed on the market fell by 76,505 tonnes in the 2012 compliance year to just over 1,426,244.069.
